About Dr. Richard Cousley

Richard is widely regarded as an expert in orthodontic skeletal anchorage, with over 25 years' experience and a track record of clinical innovations. He developed the Infinitas mini-implant system in 2007. This is the most widely used bone anchor in the UK and is currently sold in over 50 countries. He has authored over 45 peer-reviewed clinical and research papers, plus two editions of his textbook: ‘The Orthodontic Mini-implant Clinical Handbook’. Richard also created a clinical protocol for mini-implant assisted molar intrusion (to correct anterior openbites), established the UK’s leading mini-implant teaching courses (for both introductory and advanced mini-implant usage) and has lectured across the world on mini-implants.
As an early adopter of 3D imaging, model technology and in-house aligners, Richard has been keen to realise all of the opportunities offered by digital design and 3D printing workflows. This led him to develop innovations such as CAD-CAM orthognathic wafers, mini-implant guidance stents, plus the digital Twin Block appliance - all designed using orthodontic software. Richard was also instrumental in introducing 3D printed metal appliances to UK orthodontics and co-founded the UK’s first training course in digital orthodontics, both in 2023. He has since become a sought-after authority on orthodontic software and 3D printing applications, and co-created the UK's first 3D Orthodontics training course (for orthodontists and technicians).
Richard created the Priestgate Clinic, a bespoke multi-disciplinary practice, in 2018, after a career as a NHS hospital-based consultant orthodontist (managing a large orthognathic and complex caseload for 16 years). He's also been an associate editor for the Journal of Orthodontics, a referee for eight orthodontic journals, and a Royal College of Surgeons (England) examiner for the Membership in Orthodontics (Morth) specialist examination. He’s currently a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the British Orthodontic Society, the Royal College of Surgeons of England (Faculty of Dental Surgery) and the World Federation of Orthodontists.
